The Flashs Season 3 finale ended with what could wind up being the shows most status quo altering twist yet, as Barry Allen retreated into the Speed Force to pay his penance for creating the Flashpoint timeline and Savitar. The rest of Team Flash will have to carry on in his absence in Season 4. Depending how far the writers are willing to take this new development, we could be looking at a fourth season driven not by Grant Gustins Barry Allen, but by Keiynan Lonsdales Wally West. This twist definitely has a precedent in the comics, however. And based on that source material, we have a few ideas of what to expect from the series when it picks back up in Season 4. The Crisis. Since the series first revealed Eobard Thawnes hidden room in STAR Labs, viewers have been treated to glimpses of a holographic newspaper from the year 2. FLASH MISSING and VANISHES IN CRISIS plastered on the front, along with another article titled RED SKIES VANISH. Those headlines basically sum up what happened at the end of this episode. Riz Ahmed tells Variety his opinion on the finale of HBOs The Night Of, the controversial kiss and why he doesnt want a second season. It seems that the crisis in question came about seven years sooner than expected. Which makes sense given that Barry and his friends managed to defeat Savitar years earlier than they were meant to. Comic book readers have always taken those headlines to be references to the epic 1. Crisis on Infinite Earths. In that crossover, an all powerful villain called the Anti Monitor began devouring the entire multiverse, causing red skies to appear on countless worlds. By the time the heroes of a few surviving worlds halted the Anti Monitors path of destruction, the multiverse had collapsed into one, unified DC Universe. And Barry Allen was among a number of iconic heroes who died saving the day. This particular Crisis has nothing to do with the multiverse as far as we can tell, but it did have the same end result as far as The Flash is concerned. In both cases, Barry Allen sacrificed himself for the sake of his allies and was consumed by the Speed Force. And now Wally West faces the difficult task of filling Barrys shoes and becoming the one and only Flash of his world. Though theres no guarantee the series wont eventually tackle a conflict more directly inspired by Crisis on Infinite Earths. That would be good fodder for another four way Arrowverse crossover. Mark Waids Flash. In the comics, Wally took over for his mentor in the aftermath of Crisis and wound up remaining Flash for over twenty years. Not until 2. 00. 8s Final Crisis did Barry finally emerge from the Speed Force and return to life. The question is how long Greg Berlanti and company plan on keeping Barry out of commission in the show. Will he be gone for an episode or two, or could we be looking at the prospect of an entire season built around Wallys adventures Maybe even more than one season It could be that the Flash writers have simply told all the stories they want to tell with Barry at the moment and want to move on to a new hero now. We have to wonder if the series will draw from the work of writer Mark Waid, who along with Geoff Johns is widely regarded as the best and most influential writer on the Flash comics during the Wally West era. Waid took over the series at a time when Wally was still trying to find his footing as a hero and make that awkward transition from teen sidekick to full fledged, veteran hero. Waid helped solidify the makeup of the Flash family, positioning Jay as a sort of grandfather figure to his fellow speedsters particularly to the new Kid Flash, Bart Allen. With Jay having just returned from his own Speed Force imprisonment in this episode, we could see him sticking around on Earth 1 for a while to help guide and mentor Wally at this critical stage in his superhero development. The goal with Season 4 may be to prove to viewers that The Flash is bigger than any one hero, and that speedsters like Wally, Jay and Jesse Quick are an unbreakable family of heroes. The Flash Rebirth. While it was technically writer Grant Morrison who brought back Barry Allen in Final Crisis, Geoff Johns was the one who really explored the impact of Barrys return in 2. The Flash Rebirth. Rebirth has already had a clear influence on the TV series, particularly in terms of its depiction of Barrys origin story and his connection to Reverse Flash. But now the show has the opportunity to draw even more from this seminal storyline. Rebirth deals a lot with Barry as a man out of time very much like Steve Rogers in the Marvel Universe. Having spent years trapped in Speed Force limbo, Barry struggles to readjust to life on Earth again, whether that involves reconnecting with Iris, getting his old job back or becoming reclaiming the Flash mantle from Wally. When Barry does ultimately return on the show and its surely a matter of when, not if, hell probably have to deal with a similar slate of problems. Even if Barry returns early on in Season 4, the writers may choose to push the time period forward a few years first, ensuring that Barry will be confused and adrift as he comes to terms with a Central City that moved on without him. In this way, the show could bring Barry out of limbo almost immediately and yet still have the basis of a season long struggle for the character. But were keeping our fingers crossed that the writers take advantage of this new status quo and allow Wally time to shine on his own first. Jesse is a mild mannered writer for IGN.
